GETTING READY TO GO - PLANNING FOR ADVENTURE

Big Trips: Planning & Budgeting (1)

Is your troop ready to venture beyond Council property?  Planning and taking trips is a tradition in Girl Scouting.  This workshop will focus on tools and resources to help adult volunteers facilitate girl-led travel planning: decision-making, evaluating, budgeting, safety and self-reliance, as well as having fun!

Progression Outdoors (1)

​Progression, from novice to expert, allows girls to learn the skills they need to become comfortable in the outdoors, including how to plan, organize and lead outdoor activities.  Learn how to facilitate, encourage and support a girl's mastery of outdoor skills and invite her to challenge herself further by taking that next step up and out! Outdoor fun is endless especially when girls have gained the confidence to lead and share what they've learned with others. 

Take Action (1)

Girl Scouts help their communities through service projects and Take Action projects.  Both are important!  Join our Girl Scout Community Partner KC Water to learn the key differences and how to prepare girls for Take Action projects which are the foundation of Girl Scout highest awards, using water as an example!

Basic Nature: Birds & Habitats (2)

Learn from our experts as you explore birds and animal habitats.  Understand how animals and plants adapt to thrive where they live.  Take away fun learning activities to share with your troop at camp.

Bugs - The Good, the Bad, the Ugly (1)

Bugs provide value and benefits to humans and society. Foster your love of insects at camp with hands-on activities and tips for calming those camper nerves about the "creepy crawlies" at camp.  Or, maybe the girls run to them and you want to run away from them. Learn about bugs and spiders and how you can co-exist in their habitat.

Camp Ceremonies (2)

Ceremonies help mark special events and honor Girl Scout traditions throughout the year.  In this workshop, we'll discuss ceremonies like Scout's Own, campfire, investiture and rededication.  Ideas and demos will be presented to help you guide your Girl Scouts in creating meaningful ceremonies.  

Camp History (3)

For more than 70 years, Girl Scouts have explored the outdoors at Camp Prairie Schooner.  Learn camp history, early namesakes (behind  Neal Lodge and Dewitt Cabin), and how the first campers traveled to camp by train.  You'll learn the legend of the Prairie Fairy and explore lesser known areas of camp.  

Camp Songs (1)

Singing is a beloved Girl Scout tradition.  Get in tune with camp songs for all occasions: Grace, silly hiking songs, tunes for special ceremonies, and fun songs to sing around the campfire.   

Flag Ceremonies (2)

Presenting the colors before each Girl Scout event reaffirms the duty that we have to our country and instills the values of respect and citizenship.  Whether you’re hoisting, lowering, folding, or even just holding the American flag, there are strict guidelines that should always be followed.    Join us to learn what you need to know to teach a proper flag ceremony.

This workshop will be combined with Flag Ceremonies.  

Leather Stamping (2)

Create leather name tags and more with leather stamping.  While it may sound complicated, with the right supplies it is surprisingly easy to stamp leather.  Create your own custom piece using leather, stamps and a hammer. 

Lummi Sticks (2)

Are you looking for activities that will get your Girl Scouts moving to the beat of their own drum?  You'll learn styles of creative movement that will become beloved camp activities.  Lummi Sticks are percussive musical instruments named after the Lummi Native American people. Long wooden cylinders resembling drumsticks can be used as musical instruments, and for activities and games.   Tinikling or "bamboo dance" includes synchronized dance steps maneuvering between large bamboo poles.  Lummi Sticks & Tinikling workshop will be combined into one session.


Outdoor Science (2)

Outdoor STEM activities are a great way to engage girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.  Learn how to incorporate these educational disciplines into your troop's outdoor adventures with make-n-take activities.

Plant & Tree Identification (2)

Plants and trees are everywhere.  Take time to get to know them better.  Identify native plants and trees, with an introduction to uses as wild edibles and medication.  

Reptiles - Cold Blooded in a Good Way (1)

Turtle, snakes and lizards … oh my!  Learn about the cold blooded creatures that you and your Girl Scouts may encounter while playing in the outdoors or camping

Team Building (2)

Learn tips and tricks to facilitate team building activities.  You will communicate and collaborate with others to complete challenges and get to know each other better.  Team building is great for new and established troops. 

Tinikling (2)

Time Fillers (2)

Worried about ways to engage girls during down time?  What if it rains while you're at camp?  Use these quick and easy crafts, games, and skits to engage your troop in those times when they need something quick to hold their attention.  

Wood Carving (2)

This workshop is designed to introduce wood carving.  Carving is one of the oldest forms of woodworking. Learn the different tools and techniques to create your own basic wood carving.

Wood Crafting (2)

The things you can do with a hammer, wood, nails and glue.  Combine the right tools and pieces of wood to create your own handcrafted masterpiece.  Guarantee your good night's sleep with a Dream Catcher make-n-take project.  

CAMPING SKILLS


Blended Learning Camping 102 (3)

This hands on workshop covers the important skills and information you need to take your troop camping in an outdoor camping unit (permatent, tent, etc).  Upon completion, you will earn your Camping 102 certification.

Prerequisite: Camping 101 and online course work for Camping 102 prior to attending conference.

Fire Building (2)

​Tinder. Kindling. Fuel.  Girl Scouts have a special way to build and start a campfire.  In this hands on workshop, you will learn to safely lay, light, use, and extinguish a fire while practicing leave no trace camping.   You will also learn to make safe fire starters to help get your fire blazing.  


First Aid/CPR (2)

Emergencies require prompt action and quick judgment.  For many activities, Girl Scouts recommends at least one adult volunteer be First Aid/CPR certified.  In this workshop, you will complete certification required for overnight trips, camping and high risk activities. 

Prerequisite:  3 hour online training prior to conference - details available in September.

First Timer's Camping (1)

Is it time to plan your troop's first camping experience?  YIKES!   You will learn from two experts  how to best plan for and have a great camping experience.

Knot Tying & Lashing (1)

​Bowline, clove hitch or big tangled mess?  Knots have so many practical uses. Learn how to tie and use various knots to enhance your camping experience. 
​Lashing is an arrangement of rope, wire, or webbing with a linking device used to secure and fasten two or more items together in a somewhat rigid manner. Lashings can be used to build camp gadgets to improve a campsite's comfort and convenience.  This workshop will teach you the art of lashing with a hands on project you will take home.

Lanyards (1)

A lanyard is a cord or strap that can be used for many things.  For example, it can be worn around the neck, shoulder, or wrist to carry keys, ID cards, or can be clipped on a zipper. Learn about different styles of lanyards and make your own to take with you.  This is a great activity to do when you have some down time.  

Paracords (1)

Learn the basics of a paracord project.  We will take it step-by-step so you can easily make a key fob.  You will also see examples of other types of projects that can be completed with your Girl Scouts using paracord. 

HIKING & BACKPACKING SKILLS

Backpacking & Meals (1)

In this advanced level workshop, learn valuable tips and skills for backpacking and meals that can be put together for a day trip or overnights. 

Compasses & Topography (3)

Find your way!  You'll receive an introduction to compass and map work as a foundation for navigation skills.  Apply these skills and prepare for your troop to explore outdoors.

Day Hikes - Solar Mapping (3)

An intermediate level workshop designed to use the sun in a  fundamental lesson of navigation. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west and by noon it reaches its high point.  Don't walk in circles - know how to direct yourself accurately using the sun and share this skill with your troop.

Hiking Basics (3)

In this 2-hour workshop, establish the foundation and confidence to lead your troop on a hiking adventure - day or night.   Use the sun in a fundamental lesson of navigation.   Learn about trails, animal tracks, and signage.   Add after dark skills for night hikes hunting for constellations instead of watching what's under-foot.  

Letterboxing & Geocaching (3)

Letterboxing is an amazing adventure game played by people all over the world.  To play, you will follow clues to find a hidden box with special items inside. 

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices.  Learn to navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.  
This is an activity that is fun for all ages.  By learning the appropriate skills, Brownies can earn a letterboxing badge and Juniors can earn a Geocaching badge. 

Walking Sticks (1)

​In this 2-hour workshop, make your very own walking stick. We will provide the materials and you, the creativity.  Work with the tools needed to ensure proper technique and safety while you become more confident in your own ability.  We'll also discuss creative uses for your walking stick.

OUTDOOR COOKING METHODS & RECIPE IDEAS

Build a Box Oven (1)

A box oven can be used to cook anything you might cook in your oven at home.  You will construct a camp oven using a cardboard box and foil.​

Outdoor Cooking Methods (2)

​Progression is a common thread within the Girl Scout program.  We train the girls in basics and keep adding more complex aspects of these basics.  This list of cooking progression is by no means all-inclusive, but a sampling from which your Girl Scouts may choose.    Learn the basics and how to progress to more challenging cooking methods.  We'll discuss cooking techniques like One Pot Meals, Stick Cooking, Foil Packs, Buddy Burner and Dutch Oven Cooking.  Take home recipe ideas for the cooking methods we cover.
